All the audio and video footage related to John Crawford’s homicide viewed together is disturbing. I’ve pulled them together with additional links for perspective.
Ronald Ritchie’s 911 Call
The video of the police shooting John Crawford is disturbing on multiple levels. There is the lack of concern for the safety of shoppers as well as their failure to assess the situation. The video is even more disturbing once its synced to Ronald Ritchie’s 911 call. Ritchie clearly lied to the police. No one has been held accountable. The family is currently suing him.
Rodney Curd Interrogates Tasha Thomas
The Guardian obtained video via request through public records of Detective Rodney Curd interrogating Tasha Thomas. In the video and extremely aggressive Curd interrogates Tasha Thomas for 90 minutes. At the end of the interrogation he tells her “As a result of his actions, he is gone”.
Andrew Hawkins Explains why he wore a Justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford T-Shirt
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins wore a T-shirt demanding justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford, the black child and black man killed by police for having toy guns in the open-carry state. The head of Cleveland’s Police union demanded an apology (apparently oblivious to Cleveland Police’s current credibility problem). Hawkins issues this tearful explanation for wearing the shirt.
Jeff Follmer Demands Apology
Jeff Follmer, Police Partrolman Union President issued the following statement about Andrew Hawkins.
It’s pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law. They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland Police protect and serve the Browns stadium and the Browns organization owes us an apology.
The Follman goes on “All In with Chris Hays” and contends that both the shooting of Rice and Crawford were justified and that people should “do what [the police] say”.
Follmer’s interview manages to capture the attitudes and lack of compassion the police have for the people they brutalize. Being that institutions should never be cognitively divorced from their origins, Follmer (and Roorda in St. Louis) reminds us that the purpose of the police in America has been to control and punish the black population. Shaun King writes:
Today is bell hooks’s birthday. To honor her I am re-reading her works. This work is particularly relevant. From the erasure of black victims of state violence to the erasure of black victims of violence at the hands of black males, the continued disposability of African American female bodies is as salient as ever.
I have no words…just read
I rarely re-blog, but this one deserves being spread far and wide.
Please read the whole post included above – but the gist is as follows:
– This summer a new Clerk of Court in Franklin County discovered a trove (an entire roomful) of documents, some dating back to 1840, in a previously sealed room in the Franklin County, North Carolina Court House.
– Recognizing the historical value of these materials, she contacted the local historical society to assist in reviewing the materials, preserving them, and inventorying the materials.
– The Local historical group enthusiastically poured themselves into the project, mobilizing volunteers and the whole community – securing space to work, materials, and finances – in order to catalog and preserve the bounty of record books, photographs, deeds, chattel records, land grants, deeds, wills, personal correspondence, and countless…

Anne Coulter made the claim that nearly 20% of young African American males voted for Mitt Romney. The audience was stunned, as they should have been. Because no one goes to a show’s taping wearing their statistician hat no one there challenged her. Suprisingly no one in the media challenged her either. As a social scientist I am always wearing my statistician hat. So when she made this claim, I, being well aware that Mitt Romney recieved only 6% of the overall African American vote decided to verify this claim. Using data from the American National Election Study I was unable to verify this claim.
Nevertheless, I decided to give Miss Coulter the benefit of the doubt and examine the implied “Rise of the Young Black Conservative Male”. Afterall, there are reports (using polling data) that use this statistic to make the claim that a growing number of African American males are conservative. First, to make this claim true, one must extend the definition of young voters to include voters between the ages of 25 and 30, or exclude those between 36 and 44. Either way you examined the numbers, the extant Census data and ANES data had to be manipulated. The next step is to examine that bit of thuthiness. It is upon examination of that truthiness that we learn that African American males are NOT becomining more conservative. Instead it is because that population is dead, incarcerated, disenfranchised, or doesn’t vote. Allow me to explain. 1 in 8 African Americans are disenfranchised. The majority of these individuals are male. And before you claim felony disenfranchisement is not racially motivated, it did not exist prior to the Eve of the Civil War to suppress the votes of the few freed blacks eligible to vote. (When there is History and Data…..) In an age graded analysis of African American voters (that I had no intention of doing) Young African American males had a smaller population (about 3.7 million). Of those 3.7 Million 926,000 out of 2.2 million of 18-24 year olds voted. The additional 25-29 year olds (about 1.5 million total) 700,000 voted. So the total African American Male millenial vote is approximately 1.6 million young men out of 3.6 million men in the population or 43% of black males millineals turned out to vote. So Williard Mitt Romney won 304,000 votes out of 1.6 million and people actually claim this as a victory of sorts. Keep in mind that I cannot find data to support this. Nevertheless 8% of all black male Millenials supposedly voted for Mitt Romney. I guess, to quote Rachel Maddow, “Its a victory if you squint”.
